Getting into the “swing” of things.

January has been a very interesting month. Not only have I been busy writing new music, but I’ve also been revisiting a few old projects, networking furiously, and generally trying to keep myself as active as possible.

As part of that “busy-ness”, I’m always looking to improve the way I reach out to people, and in finding new ways of getting my music heard. To this end I’ve recently become a big fan of SoundCloud.

I’ve actually had a SoundCloud account for some time, but had not made much use of it up until now, but after reading a few articles, and particularly this one, I was so inspired that I’ve actually gone and redesigned my website frontpage to include the wonderful HTML5 playlist widget that SoundCloud provide to everyone, even those on a free account!. If you want to find new music by me in the future, then this should definitely be your first port of call, and “following” me on SoundCloud will ensure that you are the first to know when I upload any new music!

So, what have I been up to in the week or so since my last post? Well, I like to challenge myself, and I’ve recently been trying (and will continue) to write some pieces that I would say lie outside my “comfort-zone” as a composer . The most recent result of this experimentation I present to you now, my attempt and a 40′s style Big Band number, I hope you enjoy it. :)

Please feel free to leave any comments on the track either here or on the track itself at SoundCloud, I look forward tor reading then and answering any questions you may have about the piece. :)

A new year, and new music!

Well, this has been my first post in a while, as unfortunately I was rather preoccupied with events in my real life during the last few months of 2011 and haven’t had too many opportunnities to post any updates here.

However, all that should change during the course of this year as I plan to write plenty of music and update here a bit more frequently with new music of my own, and any other news that interests me, and that I think you may find of interest too.

Today I’d like to share a new piece I’ve written for orchestra over the last week. It’s an up-tempo piece inspired by a lot of classic cinematic chases/pursuits I’ve seen over the years, and I hope you find it as exciting to listen to as I did to write. :)

Until next time, have a great New Year!

Nigel and Katrina – A very special wedding.

July 3rd 2011 was a special day for two people I know very well. My close friends Nigel and Katrina had approached me a few months ago to inform me that they were planning on getting married in tJuly 3rd 2011 was a special day for two people I know very well. My close friends Nigel and Katrina had approached me a few months ago to inform me that they were planning on getting married in the very near future, and they also asked me at that time if it would be possible for me to write a piece of music for their special day. The idea they had was that this piece was to be played after the wedding ceremony itself, when the bride and groom were preparing to leave the church, followed by their guests, and it was to symbolise the bond of union between the newly wed couple, and their hopes and dreams for the future.

Of course I thought this was a wonderful idea, and did actually begin writing a main theme at the time. However, due to work on other projects taking precedent, and also my being out of the country for a month during May/June, I didn’t actually get to sit down and write the majority of the score until just a couple of weeks before the wedding itself. This wasn’t really a problem however, as the work I had done on the main theme previously meant that once I got into my writing “zone”, the music pretty much wrote itself, and it was then just a case of making sure that the recording and mixing for the final CD that was to be used during the ceremony was of the best quality.

As this was a piece written for friends, I was of course nervous as too what they would think of the final result, even more-so as Katrina had specifically stated that she did not want to hear the music at all until the day itself, as she wanted it to be a surprise! Thankfully, they seem to be very happy with the final result, and it is now my pleasure to present the music here, accompanied by a video slideshow of various photos from the wedding day (many thanks to Nigel and Katrina for permission to use these photos)… enjoy.

Until next time, take care.

Coventry Corps of Drums – A blast from the past!

Those of you who have read my blogs on here before, or perhaps have visited my site and read my biography, will know that many years ago I used to play a G bugle in the Coventry Corps of Drums. Life goes full circle it seems, and as I talked about in my previous blog, I’m now back doing some arrangements for them on a casual basis inbetween other projects.

I remember hearing many years ago that someone had actually managed to save some video from those early Coventry Corps of Drums performances, including our famous appearance in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City in 1983. Well, I’m happy to report that thanks to my friend Mick MacDonald on Facebook making me aware of their existence, I am now able to repost them here for your enjoyment. :)

First up, the famous New York Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade video from 1983:

The Coventry Corps of Drums performing in the 1980 National Marching Band Championships:

And finally, a local TV appearance we made shortly after winning the National Marching Band Championships:

If you managed to spot me in any of those videos well done ;) , and I hope you enjoyed this small peak at what what I used to be involved with many years ago, I know I certainly enjoyed seeing them again myself.

Until next time, take care and good luck!

New music projects for Spring/Summer 2011

It’s been a little while since my last update, during which I’ve been busy talking to various people about possible projects for the future.

Right now I’m hard at work on a couple of new musical arrangements for the City of Coventry Corps of Drums, a local marching band that I happened to be member of many years ago. I’m looking forward to hopefully hearing them performed in the not too distant future, and I’m sure that these will be just the first of many new pieces that I arrange for them.

There are also a couple of other interesting projects on the horizon, and both are in quite different areas. However, it’s far too early for me to really talk about them in much detail beyond saying that they are promotional in nature, and involve moving images, so I hope they’ll be a pleasant surprise when they finally do surface. :)

In the meantime, please feel free to browse my website and leave your feedback either here or on my Facebook page.

Until next time, take care,

Terry

Massey Ferguson Social Club – The Movie!

Ok, so maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but it is true that I’ve just recently finished work on a brand new promotional video for the website of Massey Ferguson Sports and Social Club on Broad Lane, Coventry! ;)

Altogether it took a couple of months of part-time work to complete fully, as this was the first time I’d attempted anything like it, and it was quite an interesting journey. I learned quite a few things during the filming/editing/composition processes, such as how to use video post-processing effectively, and finding out just what does and doesn’t work when you’re mixing a modern pop/jazz track to go with said video! I have to say I’m quite pleased with end result.

So, now I present to you “Massey Ferguson Social Club – Promo video 2011”

Let me know what you think!

If you happen to live in the Coventry area, and are planning a wedding reception, party, or some other function, I highly recommend checking out their facilities:
